Steve Mason
Singer and songwriter from Fife, lead singer in the now disbanded but critically acclaimed Beta Band has gone on to release albums as King Biscuit Time, Black Affair and is now recording his third solo album under his own name for release in 2016 on Double Six / Domino Records. Check out the two previous releases here… expect a solo acoustic mix of material from his rich back catalogue.
Richard Dawson
Rising up from the bed of the River Tyne, a voice that crumbles and soars, that is steeped in age old balladry and finely chiselled observations of the mundane, Richard Dawson is a skewed troubadour at once charming and abrasive. His shambolically virtuosic guitar playing stumbles from music hall tunesmithery to spidery swatches of noisecolour, swathed in amp static and teetering on the edge of feedback. His songs are both chucklesome and tragic, rooted in a febrile imagination that references worlds held dear and worlds unknown.
Pip Dylan
Pip Dylan is a Vestapol playing flamenco lovin’ banjo pickin’ lap steel dobro pumping ceilidh flitting tile laying sangster from the East Neuk o’ Fife. He’s crooned with everyone from them thar villages when they were but nippers – King Creosote / KT Tunstall / James Yorkston / Steve Mason / Lonepigeon – they’ve all taken his barrelhouse licks on board. Nowadays he’s more likely to be seen recording CDr albums in his pickle winkers, selling them around the world to his loyal but scattered fan base. Not to be missed, a gig from one of the rarest of the Fife hermits.

James Yorkston / Karine Polwart / James Robertson – 09/10/15
Tae Sup wi’ a Fifer – James Yorkston / Karine Polwart / James Robertson
A shared exploration of story and song with these three well respected and original Scottish writers.
In 2013, James Robertson wrote a story every day. Each was exactly 365 words long. A year later, on a daily basis, the stories were published – first on the Five Dials website and then the complete collection appearing in November 2014 on Penguin Books. Some of the stories draw on elements of ancient myth and legend, others are outtakes from Scottish history and folklore; there are squibs and satires, songs and ballads in disguise, fairy tales, stories inspired by dreams or in the form of interviews, and personal memories and observations. Underpinning all of them are vital questions: Who are we? What are we doing here? What happens next?
In this evening’s exclusive show, James Yorkston, Karine Polwart and James Robertson himself will be exploring that collection and discussing the links between songs and stories. James Yorkston and Karine will be performing many songs of their own that Robertson’s work has called to mind and there’ll be plenty of blether and banter alongside, explaining the links, the narratives, the ideas. Expect an evening of insight and exploration and to hear much loved songs coming from different perspectives.
Karine Polwart’s talent for crafting enduring melodies and her gift for saying just enough without overstating her case have established her as one of the foremost songwriters on the Scottish and UK folk scenes. Four times winner at The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including twice for Best Original Song, her 2012 album Traces was picked as Album of The Year by both The Herald and The Guardian and was shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year Award.
“One of the finest singer-songwriters in Britain” The Guardian
James Yorkston “One of the most respected and influential singer/songwriters on the Scottish indie-folk scene” (The Scotsman), James released his 9th album, ‘The Cellardyke Recording and Wassailing Society’, in 2014. “Another sublime piece of work” – The Scotsman 5/5, “Poetic genius at work…the flawless record that Yorkston has long promised” – Q, “Customarily brilliant piece of work” – The List 5/5
James Robertson‘s The Testament of Gideon Mack was longlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize and selected for Richard and Judy’s Book Club the following year. Joseph Knight was the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year in 2003 and And the Land Lay Still was recipient of the same prize in 2010.

Dick Gaughan
The only performer to hold the dual honours of a Lifetime Achievement award by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and induction into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame. “One of the five or six great voices of our time.” (John Peel). “How music from the gut really sounds” (Guardian). “Gaughan is absolutely one of the best in the world” (Frets). “In any style, on any stage, Gaughan is one of folk music’s guitar geniuses as well as one of Scotland’s finest singers” (Dirty Linen).
Lisa O’ Neill
Lisa O’Neill’s songs are like milking stools or three-wheeled cars or unicycles: they’re scuffed and unusual and they’re built to do specific jobs. Lisa does not sugar her truth. She has self-released 2 albums and is currently writing material for the 3rd. Over the last couple of years Lisa has toured North America, Canada, Central Europe, Scotland & the UK, opening for David Gray, Mick Flannery, Angel Olsen as well as Glen Hansard and Sixto Diaz Rodriguez along the way.
”O’Neill is real. Her songs, poetry. Her gift, of the ages. It’s possible she’s the most important artist out of Ireland for decades.” – The Herald

Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat
Two of Scotland’s most characterful musicians, jazz pianist Bill Wells & ex-Arab Strap vocalist / lyricist Aidan Moffat’s first release as a duo, ‘Everything’s Getting Older’ won the 2012 Scottish Album of the Year award. Their 2015 follow-up ‘The Most Important Place in the World’ promises to be one of 2015’s most significant releases. “It’s a career-high shared, as Wells lays down warm, jazzy arrangements and Moffat muses with trademark candour” (The List)
Aidan O’Rourke
Both a “dazzling fiddler” (Scotland on Sunday), and an “unfailingly strong and imaginative” composer (The List), Aidan O’Rourke stands at the centre of the modern Scottish folk music revival. Loved for his warm lyrical fiddle style and admired for his adventurous compositions, O’Rourke has emerged as one of Scotland’s leading artists, defining a modern attitude to traditional music. In February 2014 he was named ‘Musician of the Year’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Aidan will be playing this show with Graeme Stephen.
Sheena Wellington
Scotland’s leading traditional singer, Sheena Wellington was born in Dundee into a family of singers and factory weavers and is perhaps best known outside traditional music circles for her singing of “A Man’s A Man For ‘a That” at the Opening Ceremony of the first Scottish Parliament. Sheena’s repertoire covers everything from Burns to ballads to the best of contemporary song writing, drawing from the rich Scottish tradition passed from musician to musician through the ages.
